Nursing education had gone its up and downs throughout the decade. Florence Nightingale gave the earliest nursing education. She had seen nursing as a form of apprenticeship wherein it must be done by women and undertaken by religious orders.
Nightingale set up the first nurse training school at St. Thomas Hospital, London. She formulated the first nursing curriculum that served as a large base of nursing practice. She emphasized on the needs for hygiene and task competence in nursing practice.
Moreover, as time passed by, nursing education has gone different changes. A lot of nursing school all over the world has developed different curriculum when it comes to nursing practice. Top nursing schools throughout the world are able to produce quality nurses that can practice their skills in different countries.
In the Philippines, there are several nursing schools that produced mounts of nurses. There are several nursing schools that sprouted for the past years. This is for the reason why nursing is very much in demand and a way for a school to have great income is through having a nursing college or nursing department. However, this strategy did not work fine. There are vocational schools or agricultural schools that offered nursing education even if their school’s line of specialty was out of the medical field. This seems a contrast when it comes to the quality of education that the school may give to the nursing students.
The increased amount of nursing students to an organization is another factor that depresses the quality of nursing education to an institution. Colleges and universities must allow only restricted number of students to enroll as nursing students. The quality of education will be affected if there is a great quantity of nursing students. It is quite hard for the instructors to teach if they are dealing in a large number of students. Moreover, it is quite hard to identify which student needs more attention if the professors will be teaching outrageous number of students.
On the other hand, the passing rate of most nursing schools on nursing board exam seems to be depressed than the past years. Undergraduate education plays a major part when graduate nurses will be examining for the board exam. Given the fact that instructors are unable to teach and focus well because of the large number of students, there is somehow a chance that nurses will not pass the board.
The government has now done restrictions to minimize the depressed passing rate of nursing schools. Nursing schools must not have consecutive depressed passing rate. Consecutive depressed passing rate will make force the nursing school to be closed. Some universities these days have stopped accepting nursing students.
